Flamenco Ballet of Andalusia

"Pineda"

Federico García Lorca wrote “Mariana Pineda” when he was barely twenty years old. However, the origin of the work dates back to the poet’s childhood in Granada and his encounter with the bronze statue of the liberal heroine at that time. Nonetheless, it was not until the beginning of his career as a playwright that the poet felt the poetic imperative to transform that profound childhood impression into a play. For García Lorca, there were a thousand different Marianas de Pineda. The heroic Mariana, the mother Mariana, the lover Mariana, the embroiderer Mariana... The Flamenco Ballet of Andalusia has chosen to pay tribute to the Mariana summoned by Lorca: “a woman of deep Spanish roots, who sings to love and freedom.” The Flamenco Ballet of Andalusia is the leading institutional representative of Andalusia, serving as the ambassador of flamenco since its inception in 1994. Patricia Guerrero, as a first time director of the Flamenco Ballet of Andalusia, takes on the challenge of embodying Mariana Pineda with body and soul. In this version the spiritual and expressive strength of Lorca’s dramatic poem is explored. Patricia Guerrero, accompanied by an exceptional artistic team, offers us a vibrant, Granada-born, universal, and decidedly flamenca Pineda .
