Lecture (Conference) - Cristina Cruces Roldán

“VICENTE ESCUDERO. BAILAORA GEOGRAPHY IN THE AVANT-GARDE SPACE"

“VICENTE ESCUDERO. BAILAORA GEOGRAPHY IN THE AVANT-GARDE SPACE".

The similarity that can be found between Sabicas and the dancer Vicente Escudero lies in the fact that they are two highly significant artists born in regions far from the flamenco heartland - the former in Pamplona and the latter in Valladolid -. Both also spent many years of their lives in the United States, where they achieved great success. It could be said that Escudero was ahead of his time, and that perhaps, his dance, his work, and his career have not been sufficiently recognised in his homeland, although many artists consider him a genius, much like Sabicas. Cristina Cruces Roldán, Professor of Social Anthropology at the University of Seville, will delve into his work and present a detailed analysis of this artist -a contemporary of La Argentina, whose guiding lights were the avant-garde movements of the early 20th century-. Lights and shadows of an artist, perhaps misunderstood, who painted first what he later danced.

This fascinating conference will take place at Baluarte on 31st August at 1:30 pm. Admission is free until the venue's capacity is reached.
